EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 17th-century copperplate engraving, Holy Roman Emperor Conrad III, also known as Conrad III, Duke of Swabia and King of Germany, is depicted in regal splendor. Born in 1093, Conrad was the eldest son of Duke Frederick II of Swabia and Agnes of Waiblingen. He ascended to the throne in 1138 following the death of Emperor Lothair III. Conrad III is shown here with a full red beard, a distinctive feature that sets him apart from his successor, Frederick Barbarossa, who would later become famous for his own red beard. The emperor wears the imperial insignia of the double-headed eagle, symbolizing his rule over both the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of Italy. The inscription at the bottom of the print reads "Conradus III, Ducis Sueviae, Rex Germanie," translating to "Conrad III, Duke of Swabia, King of Germany." Conrad's reign was marked by conflict with the papacy and the Lotharingian dynasty. He was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in Rome in 1152, but died shortly thereafter, likely from malaria. This engraving, created by the Dutch engraver Abraham Bogaerts for the work "De Roomsche Monarchy" or "The Roman Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697, serves as a visual record of Conrad III's imperial lineage and legacy. The classical portrait style, reminiscent of the Caesars and Kaisers, further emphasizes Conrad's imperial authority and status. This print offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Holy Roman Empire and the iconic figures who shaped its course.
