EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts Hedyosmum bonplandianum, also known as Hedyosmee de Bonpland, a beautiful and fragrant plant native to South America. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The intricate details of the plant are expertly rendered by French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), considered one of the greatest of the 19th century. Turpin's skillful use of stipple engraving technique, a labor-intensive process involving the application of tiny dots to create shading and texture, brings the plant to life in vivid detail. The Hedyosmum bonplandianum is shown here with its black flag-like leaves, star-shaped flowers, and iris-like fruits. The plant is also known for its Ferraria undulata and Ondulata varieties, characterized by their wavy edges. The plant's iridescent and stellaria (star-shaped) flowers add to its allure. The Hedyosmum bonplandianum is not only a beautiful ornamental plant but also has edible fruits that are used in traditional medicine and cooking in South America. Antoine Laurent de Jussieu, a prominent French botanist, was a pioneer in the classification of plants and played a significant role in the development of modern botanical nomenclature. This illustration is a testament to the rich history of botany and the importance of accurate and detailed documentation of plant species.
