EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Johann Carl Bock in 1786, showcases an intriguing assemblage of moths and butterflies from the Lepidoptera order. The image includes six distinct species, each with unique characteristics that reflect their place in the natural world. In the foreground, we find two moths identified as the Black-spot Chestnut (Conistra rubiginosa, number 1 and 4) and the Small Quaker (Orthosia gothica, number 1 and 2). The Black-spot Chestnut is easily recognizable by the distinct black spots on its wings, while the Small Quaker boasts a striking resemblance to a monk with its hooded appearance. Numbered three and five are the Setaceous Hebrew Character (Xestia c-nigrum) and the Small Quaker (Orthosia cruda), respectively. The Setaceous Hebrew Character is known for its dark, hairy wings, while the Small Quaker (Orthosia cruda) displays a more subtle coloration. The remaining two species are the Rosy Footman (Phalaena bombyx gothica, number 6) and the Vau Punctatum (Phalaena pulverulenta, number 7). The Rosy Footman, also known as the Rosy-bordered Pug, is characterized by its rosy-pink coloration and distinctive black border on its wings. The Vau Punctatum, on the other hand, sports a speckled appearance with a predominantly white wing base. This work of art not only highlights the beauty of these insects but also serves as a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that characterized natural history illustrations during the 18th century. The intricate engraving process, combined with the delicate hand-coloring, results in a visually stunning representation of these fascinating creatures in their various stages of life, from caterpillar to pupa to adult.
