EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the Heart-leaved Poison, or Gastrolobium bilobum, a fascinating and intriguing plant native to Western Australia. The image, created by the skilled hands of Weddell, based on a drawing by the renowned botanist John Curtis, was published in the continuation of William Curtis's Botanical Magazine in London in 1821. Gastrolobium bilobum, also known as the Two-lobed Gastrolobium, is a member of the Fabaceae family, commonly known as legumes. The plant is easily identified by its heart-shaped leaves, which are large, glabrous, and have a distinctive two-lobed appearance. The flowers of this plant are small, tubular, and yellow in color, and they bloom in clusters. Despite its beautiful appearance, Gastrolobium bilobum is a highly toxic plant. All parts of the plant contain gastrolobin, a potent toxin that can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms if ingested. Indigenous Australians have used the plant for medicinal purposes, but only with extreme caution and under the guidance of experienced elders. This engraving is a testament to the beauty and intrigue of the natural world, as well as the skill and dedication of the botanists and artists of the past. It invites us to appreciate the wonders of nature, while also serving as a reminder of the importance of handling potentially dangerous plants with care and respect.
