Commission Commonwealth Cwgc Extension Graves Headstone Ieper Ypres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the headstone of Reverend Michael Bergin, MC, located at the Reningelst Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Extension in Belgium. Reverend Bergin, an Irishman born in County Meath, served as a chaplain during the First World War with the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery and dedication to the spiritual and emotional wellbeing of the soldiers under his care. The image shows the intricately carved headstone, adorned with the insignia of the Military Cross and the cross of the Church of Ireland. The inscription reads, "In loving memory of The Revd. Michael Bergin, MC, R.A.M.C., Chaplain to the Forces, who died on the 14th October, 1918, aged 43 years. 'Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.' John 15:13." The Reningelst CWGC Extension is situated in the peaceful and historic town of Ieper (Ypres), in the province of West Flanders, Belgium. This extension is part of the larger Ypres (Ieper) Town Cemetery, which holds the graves of over 11,000 soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War. The extension itself contains the graves of over 1,500 soldiers, many of whom were buried during the final months of the war in 1918. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Reverend Bergin and the countless other soldiers who gave their lives during the First World War. The headstone stands as a testament to their bravery, dedication, and the enduring impact they had on the lives of those they served.
