EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Johann Sebastian Leitner after an illustration by Christian Leinberger, showcases an intriguing assemblage of African and European wildlife. At the center, the grand head of a Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) dominates the composition, its large, spiraling horns reaching upwards. To the left, the impressive horns of an Alpine Ibex (Capra ibex) are displayed, their twisted shape a testament to their rugged mountainous habitat. To the right, the delicate horns of a Dorcas Gazelle (Gazella dorcas) and a Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) are juxtaposed, highlighting the contrast between the graceful gazelle and the powerful kudu. This intriguing arrangement of animal heads is reminiscent of the exotic treasures found in a Wunderkammer or Cabinet of Curiosities. The engraving is taken from Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae, published by Blusse and Son in Nuremberg in 1771. The collection and study of such diverse and unusual specimens was a popular pastime among the European aristocracy of the time, reflecting their fascination with the natural world and their desire to expand their knowledge. The meticulous attention to detail in the engraving, from the intricate textures of the animal hides to the lifelike rendering of their eyes, brings these magnificent creatures to life, transporting us to a time when the wonders of nature were a source of endless fascination and inspiration.
