EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, created by August Dumenil after an illustration by Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases two intriguing and distinctly different marine creatures: the Harlequin Beetle (Acrocinus longimanus) and the European Spider Crab (Maja squinado). The Harlequin Beetle, also known as the Macrope or Harlequin of Cayenne, is depicted on the left side of the image. With its vibrant, iridescent colors and elongated legs, this beetle is a true marvel of the natural world. The Harlequin Beetle is native to the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and is known for its ability to roll into a ball when threatened, revealing its bright colors as a warning to predators. On the right side of the image, the European Spider Crab (Maja squinado) makes its appearance. This crab, also known as the Maia or the Maillots, is characterized by its long, spindly legs and its distinctive, spider-like appearance. The European Spider Crab is a common sight in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea, and is known for its ability to camouflage itself by changing the color of its claws to match its surroundings. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving not only showcases the natural beauty of these two fascinating marine creatures, but also serves as a testament to the artistic skill and naturalistic accuracy of the illustrators and engravers of the 19th century. The hand-coloring adds an extra layer of depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true work of art.
