EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts Gutta Percha, also known as Taban or Palaquium Gutta, as illustrated by David Blair for Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" published in London in 1880. The image was later lithographed by Hanhart. Gutta Percha is a natural rubber latex obtained from the sap of several trees in the Sapotaceae family, most notably the Palaquium gutta tree. The tree is native to Southeast Asia and is commonly found in Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia. The lithograph shows the tree's bark being tapped to extract the valuable sap, which was once used extensively in herbal medicine. Gutta Percha was highly regarded for its medicinal properties, particularly for its ability to act as a cathartic and purgative. It was also used to treat various ailments such as dysentery, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal issues. The sap was typically prepared by boiling it to remove impurities and then forming it into small pellets or tablets. The pellets were then taken orally or used as suppositories. The use of Gutta Percha as a medicinal substance declined with the advent of synthetic medicines, but it continues to be of interest to researchers due to its potential therapeutic properties. The intricately detailed illustration showcases the tree's bark, with its rough texture and distinctive pattern of raised bumps, as well as the sap being collected in a container. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a beautiful and informative addition to any botanical or medical collection.
