EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing print, hand-colored steel engraving by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries, showcases a captivating assemblage of four different species from the natural world, as featured in the "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839. At the center of the image, the Greater White-toothed Shrew (Crocidura russula) and the Grey Musk Shrew (Suncus murinus) can be seen. The Greater White-toothed Shrew, with its striking white incisors, is a small, nocturnal mammal native to Africa and parts of Europe. The Grey Musk Shrew, also known as the Striped Field Mouse or the Striped Shrew, is a common species found throughout Africa, Asia, and Europe. To the right, the Dusky Musk Deer (Moschus fuscus) is depicted. This endangered species is native to the forests of Southeast Asia and is known for its distinctive, musky odor. The male deer sports a pair of large, curved antlers, while the female is shown without antlers. The Musk Deer is accompanied by two other shrew species, the Muskette Shrew (Musaraigne musette) and the Montjourou Shrew (Musaraigne montjourou), both native to Europe. The Muskette Shrew, also known as the Long-tailed Shrew, is characterized by its long, bushy tail, while the Montjourou Shrew, or the Short-tailed Shrew, has a relatively shorter tail. This beautiful and detailed engraving not only serves as an accurate record of these fascinating creatures but also highlights the intricacies of natural history illustration during the 19th century.
