EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Greater Amberjack, Seriola dumerili, a vibrant and powerful fish native to the Indo-Pacific region. The intricately detailed illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy. The Greater Amberjack, also known as the Greater Barracuda or the Yellowtail Amberjack, is a large, fast-swimming fish that can reach lengths of up to 120 cm and weigh over 30 kg. Its body is elongated and compressed laterally, with a prominent dorsal fin and large pectoral and pelvic fins. The fish is named after the French naturalist Jean Victor Audouin, who first described it in 1828. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and engraved by Carini, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin (1775-1840) was a renowned French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, known for his precise and beautiful illustrations of plants and animals. This particular engraving also features other marine species, including the Sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus, the Moonfish, Mene maculata, and the Zeus maculatus, or Spotted Tuna. The Greater Amberjack is a popular game fish and is highly valued for its meat, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and is considered a delicacy in many parts of the world. The fish is also an important species in marine ecosystems, playing a crucial role in the food chain as both a predator and prey. Today, the Greater Amberjack is a target of both recreational and commercial fisheries, and its populations are monitored closely to ensure their sustainability.
