EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the interior chambers of the Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The pyramid, also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops, is located in the Giza pyramid complex in Egypt and is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids. Built as a tomb for the Pharaoh Khufu around 2580 BC, the pyramid stands at an impressive height of 146.5 meters and was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years. The interior of the pyramid is a marvel of ancient engineering. The engraving shows several chambers, including the Grand Gallery, which leads to the Queen's Chamber and the King's Chamber. The Grand Gallery is a narrow, sloping passageway with a height of over 30 meters and is famous for its steep incline and the intricately carved walls. The Queen's Chamber, located above the Grand Gallery, is a large, rectangular room with smooth walls and a ceiling covered in limestone slabs. The King's Chamber, the final destination, is a large, octagonal room with a corbel vaulted ceiling and is believed to have been the burial chamber of Khufu. This engraving is from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar, Germany, in 1792. The encyclopedic work was designed to educate children about natural history and the wonders of the world. The handcoloured copperplate engraving adds a vibrant and engaging touch to the educational material, making it an intriguing and captivating way to learn about the ancient world and its marvels.
