This hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse and Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases three distinct species of shrikes: the Great Grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor), the Grey-backed Fiscal (Lanius excubitoroides), and the Fiscal Shrike (Lanius collaris). The Great Grey Shrike, depicted in the center, is a large and striking bird with a distinctive black mask and white eyebrow, a grey back, and a long, hooked beak.
