EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse and Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases three distinct species of shrikes: the Great Grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor), the Grey-backed Fiscal (Lanius excubitoroides), and the Fiscal Shrike (Lanius collaris). The Great Grey Shrike, depicted in the center, is a large and striking bird with a distinctive black mask and white eyebrow, a grey back, and a long, hooked beak. This bird of prey is native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and is known for impaling its prey on thorns or barbs for easy access and storage. To the left of the Great Grey Shrike is the Grey-backed Fiscal, which is similar in size and shape but has a grey back and wings, a black mask, and a white eyebrow. This bird is native to Africa and is often found in savannas and grasslands. To the right of the Great Grey Shrike is the Fiscal Shrike, which is smaller and has a black mask, a white eyebrow, and a brown back and wings. This bird is native to Africa and is often found in wooded areas and savannas. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this engraving highlight the unique features of each species, providing a glimpse into the natural world of the 19th century. The artistry of du Casse and Adolph Fries, combined with the expertise of Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville, make this a valuable and beautiful addition to any natural history collection.
