EDITORS COMMENTS

This stunning chromolithograph depicts three distinct and intriguing mushroom species: Gooseberry Russula (Russula queletii), Winecork Brittlegill (Russula adusta), and Gooseberry Russula (Russula queletii) once again. The image is taken from Leon Rolland's seminal mycological guide, "Atlas des Champignons," published by Paul Klincksieck in Paris in 1910. The illustration was created by A. Bessin and expertly rendered in chromolithography by Lassus. The Gooseberry Russula, or Russula queletii, is a beautiful and edible mushroom with a bright red cap and white gills. Its cap is covered in small, gooseberry-like warts, giving it its distinctive name. The Winecork Brittlegill, or Russula adusta, is a suspect species with a cap that ranges from brown to reddish-brown and a brittle, crumbly stem. Its gills are white and turn pink when bruised. While some consider it edible, others caution against consuming it due to potential toxicity. The Gooseberry Russula, or Russula queletii, is also known as the Gooseberry Brittlegill or the Gooseberry-like Russula. This mushroom is a delight for both mycophiles and art enthusiasts, with its vibrant colors and intricate details. The chromolithograph captures the essence of these fascinating fungi, showcasing their unique characteristics and allure. As a reminder, it is essential to exercise caution when identifying and consuming wild mushrooms. Some species can be poisonous, and it is always recommended to consult a mycological expert or a reliable guide before foraging. This beautiful chromolithograph serves as a testament to the rich biodiversity of fungi and the dedication of mycologists like Leon Rolland, who documented and celebrated these fascinating organisms over a century ago.
