This striking photograph captures Rear Admiral Sir Godfrey Marshall Paine (1871-1932) in his full regalia as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB). Sir Godfrey, who was born on March 1, 1871, served a distinguished career in the Royal Navy, spanning over four decades. He was appointed as a Rear Admiral in 1917, a rank he held until his retirement in 1922. Sir Godfrey's naval career began in 1884 when he joined the Royal Navy as a cadet. He saw active service during the Russo-Japanese War and the First World War, where he commanded several ships and played a key role in various naval operations. In 1916, he was appointed as the Commander of the 1st Destroyer Flotilla, and the following year, he was knighted for his services to the navy. After his retirement from the navy, Sir Godfrey continued to serve his country in various capacities. He was a member of the Royal Commission on the Auxiliary Naval Service and the Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom. Sir Godfrey passed away on January 25, 1932, leaving behind a legacy of courage, dedication, and service to his country.
