EDITORS COMMENTS

In this photograph from the Illustrated London News Ltd archives, dated 1951, we witness an exciting moment in French railway history: the Paris-Dijon Speed-up. The electrification of the railway line between these two historic cities had just been completed, and the new, faster trains were making their debut. The Paris-Dijon route was once a lengthy journey, taking over six hours to complete. But with the arrival of these new, electrified trains, the journey time had been significantly reduced, now only taking a little over five hours. This was a major achievement for the French National Railways Company (SNCF) and a significant advancement in rail travel during the 1950s. The image showcases a limited express train, adorned with the SNCF logo, making a stop at a station. Passengers, both in couchette cars and regular seating, eagerly board the train, ready to embark on their journey. The sleeper cars, with their bunk beds, were a popular choice for those traveling overnight. The train's modern design and the efficient service it represented were a testament to the progress being made in rail transportation during this era. The Paris-Dijon Speed-up marked a new chapter in rail travel, offering passengers faster, more comfortable journeys. This photograph serves as a reminder of the excitement and innovation that characterized the railways during the 1950s, a time when travel was an adventure and the world seemed just a little bit smaller.
