EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a French musketeer from the reign of King Henri III of France, dated back to 1586. The image, drawn and lithographed by Alexandre Massard, is based on a portrait in Roger de Gaignières gallery portfolio IX, published by Le Bibliophile Jacob under the title "Costumes Historiques de la France" in 1852. The musketeer, dressed in the regal attire of the era, stands confidently with his musket slung over his shoulder. The weapon, a symbol of power and military might, is adorned with intricate engravings and a finely crafted matchlock mechanism. The musketeer's ruff, a high collar fashionable during the late Renaissance period, is neatly folded and held in place by a bandolier, which also secures his epee, a traditional sword carried by French soldiers. The print is hand-coloured, adding vibrancy and depth to the intricate details of the musketeer's uniform. The rich reds and blues of his doublet and breeches, the gold and silver accents on his armor, and the deep brown of his boots all come to life under the skilled hand of the colourist. King Henri III, who ruled France from 1574 to 1589, was known for his love of grandeur and the arts. The musketeers, an elite corps of soldiers, were an essential part of his military forces. This print offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the French court during the late 16th century, as well as the daily life of a musketeer, a symbol of power and prestige in the French monarchy.
