EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph, titled "French Infantry Uniform of the Directory Era, 1797," is an exquisite and intricately detailed depiction of a French military uniform from the Directory period. The uniform, which dates back to the late 18th century, showcases the distinctive elements that defined the French military during this era. At the center of the image, we see a soldier proudly wearing the iconic bicorn hat, tilted to one side, adorned with a rosette and a cockade. The soldier's epee, or sword, is slung over his shoulder, and a poitrine, or waistcoat, is visible beneath his open jacket. The infantryman's breeches are tucked into high, black boots, and his epaulettes, or shoulder insignia, add a regal touch to his uniform. This image is taken from "Costumes Historiques de la France," a comprehensive and influential work on historical costumes of France, published by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix, in 1852. The work was produced by the Administration de Librairie in Paris and is considered a seminal reference for scholars and enthusiasts of historical costume and military history. The meticulous handcolouring of this lithograph adds a richness and depth to the image, bringing the uniform to life and providing a glimpse into the past. The Directory era, which lasted from 1795 to 1799, was a period of significant political and social change in France, and this uniform represents the military might and grandeur of the French Republic during that time.
