EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored lithograph depicts Francois Charles Joseph Napoleon, the King of Rome, in an elegant carriage procession through the Tuileries Gardens in Paris. Born in 1811 as the son of the legendary Napoleon Bonaparte and Marie Louise of Austria, Francois Charles Joseph Napoleon held the title of King of Rome from 1811 until his father's abdication in 1814. In this image, the young king is shown wearing the sash of the Legion d'honneur, a prestigious French order of merit for military and civil merit. The sash, adorned with the golden fleur-de-lis, adds a regal touch to his attire. The carriage, drawn by two white horses, is a miniature replica of the grand carriages used by the French monarchy. The lithograph is taken from "Costumes Historiques de la France," a series published by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix. The series, which was first published in 1852, aimed to document and preserve the historical costumes and traditions of France. This particular lithograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the French monarchy during the early 19th century. The intricate details of the lithograph, from the ornate carriage to the delicate folds of the king's clothing, are a testament to the skill and artistry of the lithographers of the time. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a beautiful and valuable historical document.
