EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries for the "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases a fascinating assemblage of fossilized marine organisms and geological formations. The central focus of the image are the fossil brachiopods, specifically the Discinisca lamellosa 1 and Ox-eyed Oreo, Oreosoma atlanticum 2. Brachiopods were ancient mollusks with a hard, shell-like covering, resembling a bivalve, but with a unique feature of having a pair of feeding tentacles extending from each side. The ox-eyed oreos are particularly noteworthy due to their large, circular, eye-like structures, which were once thought to be actual eyes. However, modern research suggests that these structures were merely calcium carbonate concretions, formed around organic material or mineral deposits. Surrounding the fossil brachiopods are several geological formations, including underground caverns and orbicules. Orbicules are small, round, concentrically layered structures, formed from the precipitation of calcite or aragonite around a nucleus. These structures were often found in association with fossilized organisms and were believed to have played a role in the preservation of their remains. The term "orgues geologiques" (geological organs) refers to the various natural formations and structures that resemble organs or other anatomical features. This term was commonly used during the 19th century to describe various geological phenomena, reflecting the fascination with the natural world and its intricate structures. This image offers a glimpse into the rich fossil record and the intriguing world of geological formations, providing a testament to the beauty and complexity of the natural world.
