EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph depicts a lively scene of Fops and Dandies, or Incroyables, engaged in the popular game of Paume, also known as real tennis, during the Napoleonic era. The image is derived from a caricature published in Le Bon Genre, a French satirical magazine, and is taken from Henry Rene Allemagne's comprehensive work, "Sports and Games of Skill" (Sports et Jeux d'Adresse), published by Librairie Hachette in Paris in 1903. The game of Paume, a precursor to modern tennis, was a favorite pastime among the French aristocracy during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The game was typically played indoors in grand halls, with players using rackets made of wood and sinew to volley a small, hard ball back and forth over a net. The elegantly dressed Fops and Dandies in this illustration appear to be fully immersed in the game, their serious expressions contrasting with the playful, almost frivolous atmosphere of the scene. The intricate details of the lithograph, from the ornate decorations on the walls to the delicate folds of the players' clothing, serve to highlight the refined and sophisticated nature of the game and the leisurely pursuits of the French elite during the Napoleonic era. The use of caricature adds a touch of humor and lightheartedness to the image, making it a delightful and entertaining representation of a bygone era.
