EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, captured in June 1924, we witness the first encounter between the mystical world of Tibetan Lamas and the modernity of Europe. The Lamas, revered Tibetan priests, are seen here for the first time leaving their homeland, prompted by the invitation of British filmmaker Captain John Noel. Noel, who had gained the trust of the Tibetan community during the 1922 Everest Expedition, persuaded these spiritual leaders to embark on an unprecedented journey to Europe. The Lamas, dressed in their traditional and distinctive headdresses, are pictured here riding in a taxi, an unfamiliar mode of transportation for them. The 1922 Everest Expedition, led by Colonel Charles Howard-Bury, had been the first successful British attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Noel, who served as the official photographer and filmmaker for the expedition, documented the entire journey. In an effort to showcase the diverse cultures and landscapes of the world, he invited the Lamas to Europe to participate in the forthcoming film about the Everest Expedition. This photograph represents a significant moment in history, as it marks the first time Tibetan Lamas set foot on European soil. Their unusual headwear, a symbol of their spiritual status and connection to their culture, stands in stark contrast to the modern taxi they are traveling in, highlighting the collision of two vastly different worlds. This image not only captures the essence of this remarkable moment but also serves as a testament to the curiosity and exploration that characterized the early 20th century.
