Fath Ali Chah II, the Second Qajar Emperor or Shah of Iran (r. 1797-1834), is depicted in this stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving by Dell Acqua, as published in Giovanni Battista Sonzogno's Collection of the Most Interesting Voyages (Raccolta de Viaggi Piu Interessanti) in Milan between 1815 and 1817. The image, taken from Guillaume-Antoine Olivier's Travels in the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, and Persia (1801), captures the Shah in regal attire, seated on a richly patterned carpet, holding a hookah pipe in his right hand and a scimitar in his left. The imperial crown adorns his turbaned head, and his long, flowing beard completes the traditional Persian royal appearance. Fath Ali Chah II ascended to the throne at the age of 26, following the assassination of his father, Agha Mohammad Khan. During his reign, he faced numerous challenges, including rebellions, invasions by neighboring powers, and economic instability. Despite these challenges, he is remembered for his efforts to modernize the Persian army and administration, as well as his patronage of the arts and sciences. This image offers a glimpse into the grandeur and majesty of the Persian court during the Qajar period, a time of significant cultural and political transformation in Iran's history.
