The Farthing Pie House

The Farthing Pie House or Pye House in what is now the Euston Road was so called because mutton pies could be bought there for a farthing. Established in the 18th century, the area was rural and so the surroundings were farm fields and pleasure gardens. The place was then frequented by notable artists and writers including William Blake and Richard Wilson. Date: 1875

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the charm and allure of The Farthing Pie House, a historic 18th century establishment located in what is now the Euston Road in London. Named for the farthing, the old English coin with which one could purchase a hearty mutton pie at the establishment, The Farthing Pie House was a beloved destination for those seeking a respite from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Set amidst the rural surroundings of farm fields and pleasure gardens, The Farthing Pie House was a picturesque oasis, frequented by notable artists and writers of the time, including the visionary poet William Blake and the renowned painter Richard Wilson. The area's bucolic beauty and the warm hospitality of the pie house no doubt served as inspiration for these creative luminaries. This photograph, taken in 1875, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when a simple pie could bring joy and comfort, and when the simple pleasures of rural life could be found just a stone's throw away from the bustling city. The Farthing Pie House, with its rich history and enduring allure, remains a cherished piece of London's past, a testament to the power of tradition and the enduring appeal of a humble pie.
