EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn, London, in 1837, showcases an intriguing assemblage of exotic insects. The image features a diverse array of cockroaches and stink bugs, each displaying unique characteristics that distinguish them from one another. At the center, the Banana cockroach (Panchlora nivea) can be found, its yellowish-brown body adorned with darker stripes. To its left, the Central American Giant cockroach (Blaberus giganteus) towers over its companions, its wings spread wide and its long antennae reaching out. The Egyptian Desert cockroach (Polyphaga aegyptiaca?) is depicted in the bottom left corner, its elongated body and slender legs well-suited to the arid environments of its native habitat. Among the stink bugs, the Spined Stink Bug (Loxa flavicollis) stands out with its distinctive spines and bright yellow and black coloration. The Man-faced Stink Bug (Catacanthus incarnatus) is shown in the top right corner, earning its name from the distinctive facial markings that resemble human features. Lastly, the Arilus carinatus, also known as the Devil's Coach Horse or the Soldier Beetle, is depicted in the bottom right corner, its elongated body and metallic sheen adding to the overall allure of this fascinating collection of exotic insects.
