EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "European Sea Sturgeons and Sterlets: A Rare and Endangered Aquatic Duo" This handcoloured lithograph, taken from Carl Hoffmann's "Book of the World," published in Stuttgart in 1857, showcases two remarkable European sturgeon species: the critically endangered European sea sturgeon (Acipenser sturio) and the vulnerable sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus). The European sea sturgeon, with its elongated, torpedo-shaped body, is the largest freshwater fish in Europe, growing up to 7 meters (23 feet) in length and weighing over 700 kg (1500 lbs). Once abundant in the Atlantic Ocean and the rivers that flowed into it, these magnificent creatures are now critically endangered due to overfishing for their valuable caviar and habitat destruction. The sterlet, a smaller relative, is shown in the lithograph with a more rounded body and a distinctive, dark, lateral stripe. Reaching a length of about 1 meter (3.3 feet) and weighing up to 20 kg (44 lbs), the sterlet is a rare and elusive fish that inhabits the shallow, slow-moving waters of the Black, Caspian, and Azov Seas. Listed as vulnerable, the sterlet population is threatened by habitat loss, pollution, and overfishing. This educational picture, handcoloured with great attention to detail, serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving these magnificent and rare fish species for future generations. The European sea sturgeon and sterlet are not only significant for their ecological roles but also for their historical and cultural significance as valuable resources and symbols of the rich biodiversity of Europe's aquatic ecosystems. As we admire the beauty and intricacy of this 19th-century lithograph, let us also remember the urgent need to protect and conserve these endangered species and their habitats. By raising awareness and supporting conservation efforts, we can help ensure the survival of these remarkable European sturgeon species and the health of our aquatic ecosystems.
