EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the European black elderberry, Sambucus nigra, also known as the common elder or Sambuco nero in Italian. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi and drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to capture the true essence of the plants he depicted. The European black elderberry is a deciduous shrub or small tree that grows up to 10 meters tall. Its bark is grayish-brown and ash-like, with prominent lenticels. The elderberry plant is well-known for its bitter and aromatic taste, which is due to the presence of various compounds, including quassin and quassia amara. The European black elderberry is native to Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. Its edible berries have been used for food and medicinal purposes for centuries. The plant has a rich history in botany and folklore, with references to its use in traditional medicine dating back to ancient Greece and Rome. The intricately detailed engraving showcases the various parts of the elderberry plant, including its leaves, flowers, and berries. The delicate shading and precise lines capture the textures and forms of the plant with remarkable accuracy, making this a true masterpiece of botanical illustration.
