EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts Emperor Napoleon I in his magnificent ceremonial robes, worn during his coronation on December 2, 1804, at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. The image captures the grandeur and opulence of the imperial court at the height of Napoleon's power. Napoleon is shown wearing the Imperial Mantle, or Manteau de Carême, a long, flowing cloak made of purple velvet, trimmed with ermine fur and lined with crimson satin. The mantle was fastened with a golden clasp in the shape of the imperial bee. The Emperor's coronation robe was also made of purple velvet, adorned with gold braid and embroidery, and lined with crime. The robe was closed with a golden sash, orceau, and fastened with a large golden clasp in the shape of the imperial fleur-de-lis. Napoleon is depicted holding the Sword of State, or Epee d'Etat, a symbol of his power and authority. The sword was encrusted with precious stones and topped with a golden hilt in the shape of a hand holding an orb. The Legion of Honour sash, or Ruban de la Légion d'Honneur, is visible around Napoleon's neck, signifying his status as the founder of the Order of the Legion of Honour, the first merit order in the French military and civil honours system. This handcoloured lithograph was created by Paul Lacroix for the publication "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Le Bibliophile Jacob, published in Paris in 1852. The intricate detail and vibrant colours bring the imperial court to life, offering a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Napoleonic era.
