EDITORS COMMENTS
Elisabeth de France, Daughter of King Henri II: A Regal Portrait of Youth and Beauty This handcoloured lithograph showcases Elisabeth de France (1545-1568), the beloved daughter of the renowned King Henri II of France. The portrait, created by Leopold Massard after an original painting in the gallery of Roger de Gaignières, is a stunning representation of Elisabeth's youthful elegance and regal bearing. Elisabeth, born in 1545, was the eldest surviving child of King Henri II and Catherine de' Medici. Her father, a powerful monarch, ruled France from 1547 until his untimely death in a jousting accident in 1559. Elisabeth's mother, Catherine, was an influential figure in the French court and a member of the powerful Medici family of Italy. This portrait, taken from the esteemed collection of historical costumes of France by Paul Lacroix, published in 1852, captures Elisabeth's striking beauty and the refined elegance of her attire. The intricate details of her clothing, from the delicate lace collars to the rich fabrics and embroidery, reflect the opulence and sophistication of the French court during the Renaissance period. Despite her young age, Elisabeth was a figure of great importance in the French court. Her marriage to the Duke of Orléans, brother of King Charles IX, was arranged to strengthen the political alliance between the Valois and Bourbon families. Tragically, Elisabeth's life was cut short when she died in childbirth at the age of just 23. Her untimely death deeply affected her family and the French court, and she remains a fascinating figure in the history of the French monarchy.
