EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Giarre and Stanghi for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1847, depicts a significant gathering of English royalty from the medieval period. At the center, Edward the Black Prince, the eldest son of King Edward III, is shown in humble reverence before his mother-in-law, Queen Philippa of Hainault. Philippa, dressed in regal attire and holding the sceptre and crown, exudes an air of authority and dignity. The Black Prince, wearing a heraldic tabard displaying the quartered arms of England and Aquitaine, is known for his military prowess and is often regarded as one of the greatest English commanders of the Hundred Years War. His wife, Joan of Kent, the beautiful and intelligent daughter of the Earl of Kent, stands beside him, wearing a richly embroidered gown and a diadem adorned with pearls. In the background, King Richard II, Edward's younger brother, is depicted in chainmail and plate armour, symbolizing his military readiness. Richard's presence at this gathering may suggest a political or diplomatic meeting, as he would eventually succeed Edward as king in 1377. The intricate heraldic details, from the coats of arms on the tabards to the banners and shields, add an authentic touch to this image of English royalty.
