EDITORS COMMENTS
Dr. Thomson's Rhododendron, Rhododendron thomsonii, is a stunning and rare species of rhododendron named in honor of the Scottish botanist and explorer, Dr. Thomas Thomson. This beautiful handcoloured lithograph of the flower was created by Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaires in 1851 as part of their comprehensive work "Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe" or "Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l Europe." Dr. Thomson (1817-1878) was a prominent figure in the field of botany, particularly known for his extensive explorations in the Himalayas. He was a close friend and collaborator of Joseph Dalton Hooker, the renowned British botanist and director of Kew Gardens. Hooker named this rhododendron species in Thomson's honor, recognizing his significant contributions to the scientific community. The Rhododendron thomsonii is native to the western Himalayas, growing at high altitudes in the Sikkim region of India. This rhododendron is characterized by its large, showy, and vibrant pink to magenta flowers, which bloom in late spring. The species is now considered endangered due to habitat loss and over-collection for horticultural purposes. This exquisite lithograph captures the essence of the Rhododendron thomsonii's beauty and rarity, providing a glimpse into the rich botanical heritage of the Himalayas and the important role that explorers and botanists like Dr. Thomas Thomson played in documenting and preserving these natural wonders for future generations.
