EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph depicts the Dog Rose, Rosa canina, also known as the Dog Rose, Rose de Chiens, or Common Dog Rose. The botanical illustration was created by Mlle. F. Legendre and beautifully rendered by Lecouturier for inclusion in Pierre Boitard's "Rose-Lovers Complete Manual" published in Paris in 1836. The Dog Rose is a wild species of rose that is native to Europe, western Asia, and northwestern Africa. It is a deciduous shrub that grows up to 3 meters tall and is characterized by its prickly stems and white, pink, or red flowers that bloom in late spring and early summer. The rose hips, which follow the flowers, are bright red and round, and are rich in vitamin C and other nutrients. The Dog Rose has a long history of medicinal and culinary uses. The hips have been used to make jams, jellies, and teas, while the leaves and roots have been used to make infusions and tinctures for various ailments. The rose hips were also used as a substitute for vitamin C during scurvy outbreaks. This stunning botanical illustration captures the intricate details of the Dog Rose's flowers, leaves, and hips, providing a close-up view of this beautiful and versatile plant. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true work of art. The illustration is a testament to the skill and dedication of the botanical artists and lithographers of the 19th century, who meticulously documented the natural world for scientific and aesthetic purposes.
