This stunning handcoloured woodblock print depicts Dog Mercury, Mercurialis perennis, also known as Mercorella Maschio in Italian. The plant is shown in great detail, with its distinctive white flowers and deeply lobed leaves. The print is based on an illustration by Giorgio Liberale, from Pietro Andrea Mattioli's "Discorsi di P.A. Matthioli ne i sei libri della Materia Medicinale di Pedacio Dioscoride Anazarbeo," published in Venice in 1568. Mattioli, an Italian botanist and physician, was a prominent figure in the field of herbal medicine during the Renaissance. His "Materia Medica," a comprehensive work on medicinal plants, was widely used and influential in Europe for centuries. The work was based on the writings of the ancient Greek physician Dioscorides, and Mattioli's commentary provided valuable insights and observations based on his own research and experience. The print was produced by the German engraver Wolfgang Meyerpick, who expertly translated Liberale's illustration into a woodblock print. The intricate details of the plant are beautifully rendered, with each petal and leaf carefully delineated. The handcolouring adds an additional layer of artistry, bringing the print to life with vibrant colours.
