This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Dark Dagger, Acronicta tridens (Klootdrager, Acronicta tridens): Bastard Wasps on an Apple Branch, Malus domestica," was created by the renowned Dutch naturalist and artist, Jacob L. Admiral, for the second edition of his seminal work, "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects), published by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam in 1774. The engraving depicts the Dark Dagger Moth, Acronicta tridens, a striking nocturnal insect with distinctive markings, perched on an apple branch. The moth's caterpillar and pupa can be seen on the branch as well, along with several bastard wasps, which are parasitic wasps that lay their eggs on the moth's larvae. For this second edition, the work was expanded to include eight additional plates, bringing the total number of engravings to 33.
