EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Peter Brown's seminal work "New Illustrations of Zoology" published by B. White in London in 1776, features two intriguing birds: the Cuban Grassquit, Tiaris canorus, and an unknown African grosbeak. The Cuban Grassquit, also known as the Cuban Buntings, is a small, brightly colored bird native to Cuba and the Isla de la Juventud. With its distinctive yellow underparts, black mask, and long, curved bill, it is a striking addition to any avian collection. The second bird in this image is an African grosbeak, but its exact identification remains uncertain. Two possibilities are the Brown-cheeked Grosbeak, Loxia canicola, or the Black-bellied Grosbeak, Loxia afra or Loxia melanogastra. Both species are native to sub-Saharan Africa and are known for their large, conical bills and vibrant plumage. The engraving is part of the extensive collection of Marmaduke Tunstall, a renowned naturalist and collector of the 18th century. Brown's meticulous attention to detail and masterful use of color bring these birds to life, allowing us to appreciate their beauty and intricacy over two centuries later. This engraving is a testament to the rich history of ornithological exploration and the enduring allure of the natural world.
