EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the Count of Toulouse, Comte de Toulouse, proudly displaying his standard during the 15th century. The Count, dressed in full armor and mounted on horseback, holds a lance with the banner of his house, Gueules, la croix clechée, in the foreground. The design of the banner features a red shield with a crossed gold fleece, symbolizing the Count's membership in the prestigious Order of the Golden Fleece. The Count of Toulouse was a nobleman of significant power and influence during the late Middle Ages. His standard, which bears the distinctive emblem of the Order, is a testament to his high status and his connection to this esteemed organization. The Order of the Golden Fleece was founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430, and was one of the most exclusive and prestigious orders in Europe. Membership was limited to the European nobility and the papacy, and was bestowed as a mark of favor and distinction. This beautiful chromolithograph is taken from Loredan Larchey's Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th Century, published in Paris in 1890. The illustration is taken from an earlier manuscript, Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal, Illustrated Manuscript 4790, which dates from the 15th century. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of the chromolithograph provide a fascinating glimpse into the heraldry and symbolism of the medieval period, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical art or heraldry.
