EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1926, a costumed group is depicted at Baroness D'Erlanger's celebrated Neptune's Embassy theme ball held at the Fenice Theatre in Venice. The image showcases an assemblage of elegantly dressed individuals immersed in the grandeur and allure of the Venetian Carnival. From left to right, the first figure is Princess de Faucigny-Lucinge, who brilliantly embodied the element of water. Her shimmering costume, adorned with intricate beadwork and flowing fabric, evoked the fluidity and grace of the sea. Next to her stands Viscountess Wimborne, who personified the earth element with her earthy, organic attire. Her richly textured gown, adorned with foliage and vines, symbolized the fertility and nurturing power of the earth. Mrs. Evelyn Fitzgerald, dressed as seaweed, added a touch of the ethereal to the ensemble. Her flowing, translucent gown, reminiscent of underwater vegetation, blended seamlessly with the water and earth elements. Comtesse de Buccino completed the quartet as the coral element. Her intricately designed costume, featuring vibrant hues and delicate details, mirrored the beauty and diversity of coral formations. The back row of the photograph is graced by several tritons, adding to the overall enchantment of the scene. Their majestic costumes, complete with shells and aquatic motifs, further emphasized the Neptune's Embassy theme. This photograph offers a glimpse into the opulence and whimsy of the 1926 Venetian Carnival, as well as the creativity and dedication of the participants in Baroness D'Erlanger's Neptune's Embassy costume ball at the Fenice Theatre.
