EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured steel engraving showcases the striking beauty of the Corsican pine tree, scientifically known as Pinus nigra subsp. laricio, or Pin Laricio. The image captures the tree in all its splendour, with its distinctive, twisted branches reaching out towards the sky. The cones, which are prominently displayed, are heavy and cone-shaped, with their scales adorned with small, prickly spines. The needles, which are evergreen and dark green in colour, are arranged in clusters of two, giving the tree a densely foliaged appearance. The tree's flowers, which are not visible in this image, are monoecious, meaning that they appear as male and female flowers on the same tree. The Corsican pine tree is native to the Mediterranean region, particularly the island of Corsica, and is well-adapted to growing in rocky, mountainous terrain. It is an important species in the region, both ecologically and economically, providing food and shelter for various wildlife, as well as being used for timber and resin production. This beautiful engraving is taken from Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d Histoire Naturelle, or Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History, published in Paris between 1834 and 1839. The work was a comprehensive and visually stunning compendium of natural history, featuring thousands of handcoloured illustrations of plants, animals, and minerals. The high-quality steel engraving technique used in this print allows for intricate detail and a lifelike representation of the subject matter.
