EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Corn or Maize, Zea mays, from Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), and engraved by Terreni. Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to capture the true essence of his subjects. The engraving showcases the corn plant in all its glory, with its tall, sturdy stalks adorned with broad, green leaves. At the top of the image, an ear of corn is prominently displayed, its golden kernels arranged in perfect rows. The intricately detailed illustration also includes a smaller plant in the foreground, identified as Typha angustifolia, or Narrowleaf Cattail, a type of bulrush that often grows near cornfields. Corn, also known as maize, is a staple food crop in many parts of the world, particularly in North and South America. It is an annual plant that originated in Mexico and Central America around 10,000 years ago. Corn is a versatile crop, with its edible seeds used for food in various forms, including grits, hominy, tortillas, and, of course, corn on the cob. The plant is also used for animal feed, ethanol production, and industrial applications. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of the time, providing a window into the natural world and the fascinating history of one of our most important food crops.
