EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph by Adolf Glitsch, based on an illustration by Ernst Haeckel from his renowned publication "Art Forms in Nature," showcases an enchanting assembly of Copepod crustaceans. Copepods, also known as copepoids, are a diverse and abundant group of microscopic marine organisms, belonging to the class Copepoda. The male Calocalanus pavo is depicted in the top left corner, characterized by its elongated body and large, fan-like appendages. Nearby, the female Clytemnestra scutellata is shown with her distinctive, shield-like carapace and long, feathery antennae. To the right, the males of Oncaea venusta and Acontiophorus scutatus are displayed, both featuring elongated tails and intricate body structures. The females of Cryptopontius thorelli, Sapphirina darwini, and Corycaeus venustus are depicted in the bottom left, middle, and bottom right corners, respectively. The female Cryptopontius thorelli is known for its long, slender body and fan-like appendages, while Sapphirina darwini is characterized by its translucent, blue-green coloration. The female Corycaeus venustus is shown with its typical, rounded body shape and short, feathery antennae. In the center, the male Euaugaptilus filigerus, also known as Augaptilus filigerus, is displayed with its long, filamentous antennae and elongated, tail-like urosome. The intricate details and vibrant colors of these Copepod crustaceans are beautifully captured in this stunning work of art, providing a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the marine world.
