EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from the pages of Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804, showcases two intriguing and elusive marine creatures: the Conger eel (Conger conger) and the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). The Conger eel, depicted on the left, is a large, powerful predator commonly known as the conger or conger eel. With its distinctive long, serpentine body and large, sharp teeth, it is a formidable inhabitant of the deep sea, typically found in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. On the right, the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is shown in a more delicate pose. Also known as the common eel or the Anguillid eel, this eel is native to European waters and is renowned for its remarkable ability to travel thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean to spawn in the Sargasso Sea. Once mature, European eels make their way back to their birthplace to spawn and then die, marking the end of their life cycle. Wilhelm, a Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, was an influential figure in the field of ichthyology during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His encyclopedia, which featured meticulously detailed illustrations of various fish species, was considered a significant contribution to the scientific community. This engraving is a testament to Wilhelm's dedication to documenting the natural world and serves as a reminder of the beauty and diversity of marine life.
