EDITORS COMMENTS

This handcoloured lithograph depicts the beautiful Clustervine, scientifically known as Jacquemontia pentanthos, also referred to as Convolvulus pentanthus. The image is an exquisite representation of the plant, created by the skilled hand of Lena Lowis, a British woman artist, from an original illustration. Lowis, formerly Selena Caroline Shakespear, traveled to India with her husband, Lt.-Col. Ninian Lowis, in the late 19th century. During their time in India, Lena became fascinated with the country's rich flora and fauna, leading her to create a series of illustrations, which were later published as 'Familiar Indian Flowers with Coloured Plates' by L. Reeve in London in 1878. The Clustervine is a vine native to Central and South America, but it was widely cultivated in India due to its ornamental value. The plant is characterized by its five-lobed, white or purple flowers, which bloom in clusters. The Clustervine holds significance in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is used to treat various ailments, including fever, dysentery, and skin conditions. This stunning handcoloured lithograph by D. Blair, after an illustration by Lena Lowis, captures the intricate details of the Clustervine's delicate petals, veins, and stamen, making it a beautiful addition to any botanical collection. The vibrant colours and meticulous shading bring the plant to life, offering a glimpse into the rich natural history of India during the Victorian era.
