EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "The Critically Endangered Chinese Pangolin (Manis pentadactyla): A Historical Perspective from the 18th Century" This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Valentin Bischoff after an illustration by Jacques de Seve, offers a glimpse into the natural world of the Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) as it was known during the 18th century. The Chinese pangolin, also referred to as the Chinese scaly anteater, is a critically endangered mammal native to Asia. The meticulously detailed engraving showcases the unique features of this elusive creature. With its distinctive scales covering the body, resembling armour, and the five digits on each paw, the Chinese pangolin is easily recognizable. The engraving also highlights the animal's powerful claws, which it uses to dig burrows and defend itself against predators. The Chinese pangolin was a subject of fascination during the 18th century, as evidenced by its inclusion in Johann Christian Daniel Schreber's "Animal Illustrations after Nature," or "Schreber's Fantastic Animals." Schreber's work was a groundbreaking zoological illustration series that aimed to document various species as accurately as possible. Unfortunately, the Chinese pangolin's story since the 18th century has not been a positive one. Due to its unique scales, which are believed to have medicinal properties in traditional Chinese medicine, this species has faced intense poaching and habitat loss. Today, the Chinese pangolin is considered critically endangered, with populations continuing to decline. This historical engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of conserving the natural world and the unique creatures that inhabit it. It also highlights the role that historical records and illustrations play in documenting and understanding the natural history of species, including those that are currently facing extinction.
