EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Charles I, Duke of Bourbon and Auvergne: A Regal Figure from the Renaissance Era" Charles I, Duke of Bourbon and Auvergne, is depicted in this exquisite handcoloured lithograph, an elegant and striking representation of the Renaissance nobleman. Born in 1401 as the son of Jean I, Duke of Bourbon and Marie de Berry, Charles I held significant political and military power during the 15th century. The Duke is shown wearing a long, scarlet coat, a symbol of his high rank, over a pourpoint, or fitted jacket, adorned with intricate fleur-de-lis designs. The pourpoint is paired with pink hose, adding a splash of colour to the otherwise monochromatic ensemble. The meticulous attention to detail in the lithograph, created by Leopold Massard after a figure in Roger de Gaignieres portfolio VI 22, is evident in the delicate embellishments and the Duke's regal posture. Marie de Berry, the Duke's mother, was a prominent figure in her own right, serving as the regent of Auvergne and Bourbon during her sons minority. This connection to powerful women is reflected in the Duke's attire, which includes a gorget, a protective collar, and a cape, both adorned with the fleur-de-lis, the emblem of the House of Valois, to which the Dukes of Bourbon belonged. This image, part of the "Historical Costumes of France" collection published by Le Bibliophile Jacob, offers a glimpse into the opulent world of the French nobility during the Renaissance era. The Duke's regal appearance and the intricacies of his attire serve as a testament to the grandeur and sophistication of the time.
