EDITORS COMMENTS
In this stunning handcoloured lithograph, Catherine de Bourbon, Duchess of Bar and Duchess of Lorraine, is depicted in elegant attire at the wedding of her brother, King Henri IV of France, to Marie de Medici in 1600. Catherine's elegant and refined appearance is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the French court during this period. Born in 1559, Catherine was the eldest daughter of Antoine de Bourbon, Duke of Vendôme, and Jeanne d'Albret. She was a sister to the famous and notorious King Henri IV of France, who reigned from 1589 to 1610. Catherine's marriage to Henry II le Bon, Duke of Lorraine, took place in 1579, making her the Duchess of Bar and Duchess of Lorraine. The image captures Catherine's elegant attire, which includes a voluminous gown of rich fabric, adorned with intricate embroidery and lace. Her headdress, a tall and elaborate structure, is topped with feathers and pearls, adding to her regal appearance. Her expression is serene and composed, reflecting the dignity and grace expected of a member of the royal family. This beautiful lithograph is taken from the collection "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix, published in Paris in 1852 by the Administration de Librairie. The print is a handcoloured reproduction of an original work, and the attention to detail in the colours and textures is truly remarkable. The image provides a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and style of the French court during the late Renaissance period and the reign of Henri IV. Catherine de Bourbon's life was marked by political intrigue and family drama, but her image in this lithograph remains a symbol of elegance, refinement, and the power and beauty of the French court.
