EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Buttes New CWGC Cemetery in New Zealand, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War. Located on an area that was once a pre-war drill ground, the cemetery holds great historical significance. With a total of 1,317 burials from the United Kingdom, 564 from Australia, 50 from Canada, 167 from New Zealand, and 1,703 unknown soldiers, this cemetery is a testament to the international effort in the war. Among the known burials is that of Lt Col H. Scott, DSO 6th AIF, for whom a bunker in the wooded area is named. At the far end of the cemetery stands a memorial recording the names of the 383 New Zealand soldiers who are missing. Designed by renowned British architect Charles Holden, the memorial was completed in 1932, and the cemetery continues to be a place of reflection and remembrance for visitors from around the world. The image, taken in 2016, showcases the tranquil beauty of the site, with the rolling hills and clear blue sky providing a peaceful backdrop to the solemn scene.
