EDITORS COMMENTS
1908: A Tragic Maritime Incident - The Bursting of the Starboard Main Boiler on Board KPM's Steamship Pahud This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of a catastrophic event that occurred on board the Dutch steamship Pahud, owned by the Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij (Royal Packet Navigation Company), on the morning of April 19, 1908. The image, taken at Belawan, Sumatra, Singapore, depicts the devastating consequences of the bursting of the starboard main boiler. The incident occurred at approximately 11 am, as Wilfred Landstein, an engineer, recounted in a letter to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on May 2, 1908. The letter, now held in the archives of the Institution, provides a chilling account of the events that unfolded. The photograph shows the Pahud, which was en route from Batavia (Jakarta) to Singapore, listing heavily to starboard, with a plume of smoke billowing from the ruptured boiler. The crew, working tirelessly to contain the damage and prevent further catastrophe, can be seen in the foreground, surrounded by debris and the remnants of the shattered boiler. The cause of the boiler explosion is not explicitly stated in Landstein's letter, but it is mentioned that the boiler had been undergoing repairs prior to the incident. The explosion resulted in the loss of several lives, as well as extensive damage to the ship. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the risks and challenges faced by maritime engineers and crews during the early 20th century, and the vital role that institutions like the IMechE played in sharing knowledge and advancing engineering practices to prevent such tragedies in the future.
