EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Brown Galingale or Brown Flatsedge, Cyperus fuscus, a species of sedge native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. The plant is shown in full bloom, with its distinctive brownish-reddish stems and hirsute (hairy) leaves. The small, star-shaped flowers, arranged in dense spikes, are clustered at the top of the plant, surrounded by bracts that resemble carrion or decaying matter, a common adaptation in the plant kingdom to attract pollinators. The illustration is from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The engraving was produced by the skilled hand of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), a French botanical illustrator renowned for his meticulous attention to detail and mastery of the stipple engraving technique. Turpin's work is considered some of the greatest in 19th-century botanical illustration. The engraving was drawn and directed by Turpin and published by Batelli e Figli. The Brown Galingale is also known by other names, including Giunco nero (Italian) and Cipero scuro (Spanish), and is a common vegetation in wetlands and marshes. The plant's history and botany are intricately linked to the natural sciences, and this beautiful illustration is a testament to the artistry and scientific rigor of the time.
