EDITORS COMMENTS
In August 1928, a significant pilgrimage took place as part of the post-World War I commemoration efforts. Over 11,000 people, including 3,000 women from the British Legion Women's Section, embarked on a journey to France and Flanders to pay their respects at the battlefields where countless lives were lost during the First Great War. Leading this historic group were two esteemed women: Lady Edward Spencer Churchill OBE, the Chairman of the Women's Section, and Dame Florence Simpson DBE, the Ex-Controller-in-Chief QMaC and Head of the ex-Service Women. Their presence underscored the vital role women played in the war effort and their continued dedication to remembering those who had given their lives. The pilgrimage was organized by the British Legion and was graced by the presence of the Prince of Wales. The women donned their distinctive cloche hats and medals as they embarked on this poignant journey, symbolizing their connection to the past and their commitment to the future. This photograph captures a poignant moment in history, as these inspiring women, led by Lady Edward Spencer Churchill and Dame Florence Simpson, stand together in remembrance and solidarity. Their pilgrimage to the battlefields of World War I served as a powerful testament to the resilience and determination of the British people during the 1920s, a decade marked by reflection and healing after the devastating war.
