EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Bonne of Berry, Countess of Savoy (1362-1435): A Regal Portrait in Hennin and Robe Bonne of Berry, Countess of Savoy, born in 1362 as the daughter of Jean de France, Duke of Brittany and Jeanne de Bourbon, is depicted in this exquisite handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard. The image is based on a painting from Roger de Gaignieres portfolio V 6, which was published in Le Bibliophile Jacob's "Historical Costumes of France" in 1852. Bonne's elegant attire reflects the opulence and grandeur of the late medieval period. She wears a high-necked hennin, a tall, conical headdress that was popular among the European aristocracy during the 15th century. The hennin is adorned with intricate gold and pearl decorations, adding to the regal appearance of the countess. Beneath the hennin, Bonne dons a voluminous robe, which is richly embroidered with gold threads and pearls. The robe is fastened at the waist with a wide, decorative belt, and its long, flowing sleeves are gathered at the cuffs. Bonne's veil, which covers her hair, is also adorned with pearls and gold threads, further emphasizing her noble status. Bonne of Berry's life was marked by political intrigue and marriage alliances. She was first married to Louis I, Duke of Anjou, and later to Amadeus VIII, Duke of Savoy. Her marriage to Amadeus VIII secured the Savoyard claim to the County of Geneva and the Lordship of Faucigny, making Bonne an influential figure in the political landscape of Europe during the late Middle Ages. This striking portrait of Bonne of Berry, Countess of Savoy, offers a glimpse into the opulent world of the European aristocracy during the late medieval period, and serves as a testament to the beauty and elegance of the era's fashion and art.
