EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured woodblock engraving is a botanical illustration of Barley, Hordeum vulgare, and related grasses, Barren Brome, Bromus sterilis, and Canary Grass, Phalaris canariensis, taken from the Herbal, or Krauterbuch, of the renowned German botanist and physician, Adam Lonicer (1528-1586). The illustration is from a 17th century pirate edition or atlas of the original work, which was first published in Frankfurt in 1557. The image showcases the intricate details of these grains, with the barley ears bearing ripe grains, and the long, slender stems of the other grasses. The Latin name for barley is Hordeum vulgare, with the common names of barren brome and barley being Bromus sterilis and Hordeum, respectively. Canary grass, Phalaris canariensis, is also depicted in the illustration. The various names of these plants are inscribed in Latin, Greek, French, Italian, German, and English manuscript around the image, reflecting the international reach of Lonicer's work. Barley, a staple food source for humans and animals, is identified as Frumentum Sativum in the illustration. Its wild relative, Aegilops, is also shown. The other grasses, Barren Brome and Canary Grass, were also important crops and were used for food, fodder, and medicinal purposes. The intricate details of the illustration provide a glimpse into the botanical knowledge of the time, and the multilingual captions attest to the widespread dissemination of this knowledge across Europe and beyond.
